If you spent any time in front of a Windows 95, 98, or XP machine, you know this one on sight: colorful tubes winding their way through a dark 3D space, turning corners at random, slowly filling the screen until the oldest pipes fade and new ones take over. It was the screensaver that ran on office PCs, computer lab machines, and family desktops for the better part of two decades — arguably the most universally recognized screensaver ever shipped. What 3D Pipes is
3D Pipes is a live 3D scene — not a video, not a static image — where colored pipes continuously grow through dark space, turning at intervals and eventually giving way to fresh pipes as older ones age out. It includes optional camera movement that slowly circles the scene, along with fog, shadows, and adjustable lighting, all rendered directly in your browser with WebGL. It draws everything itself and never asks for camera or microphone access, so it's safe to leave running on any screen you'd want it on.
Why it's worth running
It's instantly recognizable nostalgia. Almost nobody needs this effect explained to them — one glance and most people over a certain age know exactly what they're looking at, which makes it a great conversation starter on a shared or public screen.
It's genuinely mesmerizing to watch. There's a reason this screensaver stuck around across three generations of Windows — the slow, unpredictable growth pattern holds attention without demanding any of it.
It's highly customizable, unlike the original. The 1995 version gave you a handful of registry tweaks at best. This one has direct controls for pipe count, growth speed, turning behavior, camera movement, lighting, and more, all adjustable in real time.
It works as genuine background ambiance for work. Run it dim and slow on a second monitor or in a corner of a room, and it becomes movement without noise — present, but not demanding attention the way a video or notification feed would.
The camera rotation adds real depth. Unlike the flat 2D versions floating around online as recreations, this one is an actual 3D scene, so slowly circling the camera gives the pipes genuine depth and dimension rather than just visual busyness.
How to set it up
- Open 3D Pipes on the screen you want to use — an idle monitor, a projector, or a capture source for a stream background all work.
- Set Brightness first. Start around 70–80 for an idle screen in a normally lit room, and lower it for a darker room. Brightness raises and lowers both of the scene's lights together.
- Choose Number of Pipes and Max Segments to decide how busy the scene feels. Number of Pipes (1–20, default 8) sets how many pipes grow at once; Max Segments (10–100, default 50) sets how long each pipe gets before its oldest sections start disappearing.
- Set Growth Speed for how quickly new pipe pieces appear. This one works backwards from what you'd expect: it's a pause between growth steps in milliseconds (50–1000ms, default 200ms), so a lower number means faster growth, not slower.
- Leave Camera Rotation on for the classic circling view, or turn it off to hold the camera still if you want a fixed composition — useful if the effect is sitting behind something else on screen, like a stream overlay.
- Select Go Fullscreen. Move the mouse away and the controls fade out after five seconds, leaving just the pipes.
You'll know it's working when colored pipes are winding across a dark screen and the camera either holds still or slowly circles the scene, depending on your Camera Rotation setting.
What each control actually changes
Beyond the basics above, a few controls are worth understanding on their own:
- Segment Length (0.5–5, default 2) sets how long each straight run is before a pipe can turn — longer segments read as more deliberate, architectural growth; shorter ones look twitchier.
- Pipe Thickness (0.1–1, default 0.3) controls how thick the tubes look on screen.
- Turn Probability (1–50%, default 10%) sets how often a pipe changes direction — higher values produce twistier, more tangled pipes; lower values give straighter, calmer runs.
- Fog Effect and Shadows (both on/off, default on) add depth — fog fades distant pipes into the background, and shadows let pipes cast shadows on each other, both contributing to the scene feeling genuinely three-dimensional rather than flat.
- Ambient Light (0–100%, default 30%) and Directional Light (0–200%, default 80%) work together for contrast — Ambient Light is the soft, even light reaching every side of the pipes, while Directional Light is the stronger, one-sided light that creates highlights and shadows. Raise Directional Light for more contrast, or raise Ambient Light if the shadowed sides of pipes disappear into black.
One quirk worth knowing up front: Segment Length, Pipe Thickness, Turn Probability, and Max Segments only apply to new pipes, since a pipe's shape is locked in when it first appears. If you change one of these and nothing seems to happen, set the values you want first, then nudge Number of Pipes up or down by one — that starts a fresh batch of pipes using everything you just chose.
Advanced tips
- The color picker on the page doesn't touch the pipes. WebLight's shared color control appears on every effect page, but 3D Pipes chooses its own colors for each pipe and ignores it — don't spend time trying to recolor pipes through that swatch.
- For a calmer background behind other content, slow everything down together. Fewer pipes, a higher Growth Speed number (meaning slower growth), and a lower Camera Speed keep the scene from competing with text, overlays, or a video call window placed on top.
- For a busy wall display meant to be noticed from across a room, push the opposite direction. 14–18 pipes, Max Segments 70–90, Growth Speed 100–150ms, and Fog Effect on reads well at a distance and holds attention on a shared screen or lobby display.
- If performance gets sluggish over a long run, pull back Number of Pipes and Max Segments first. Fewer, shorter pipes give the renderer far less to draw each frame than any other adjustment.
FAQ
Does this need camera or microphone access? No. 3D Pipes draws everything in your browser and never requests either — it only needs graphics acceleration turned on.
Can I change the pipe colors? No. A color picker appears on the page since it's shared across every WebLight effect, but 3D Pipes generates its own colors for each pipe and ignores that control entirely.
Will my settings be saved for next time? No. Brightness and every pipe control reset to their defaults when the page reloads. A logo you add is the exception — that's remembered in your browser on that device, but the pipe and lighting settings are not.
Can I use this as my actual computer screensaver? You can run it fullscreen in a browser tab, but it won't replace your operating system's built-in screensaver or override your display's sleep settings. If you want it running unattended for a long stretch, adjust when your screen sleeps in your device settings first.
Why did some of my slider changes not do anything? Several controls — Max Segments, Segment Length, Pipe Thickness, and Turn Probability — only take effect on pipes that haven't started growing yet. Set your values, then nudge Number of Pipes by one to force a fresh set of pipes to spawn with the new settings.
