The Countdown Timer effect turns a screen into a large, readable countdown with a progress ring, a choice of backgrounds, and optional music, then announces the end with a chime and an on-screen message. Use it for a workshop break, a timed classroom activity, or an event countdown on a lobby screen.
Before you start
- A duration in mind. You set minutes and seconds directly — there's no calendar or scheduled event-time picker.
- A plan for Auto-loop if you want repeating rounds. It inserts a fixed 10-second break between rounds; only the round length is adjustable.
- Speakers in range of the device running the effect, if music or the chime needs to be heard.
- One click on the page before relying on sound. Browsers require interaction before audio plays; pressing Play satisfies that.
Set it up
- Open the Countdown Timer effect. Settings open on the Timer tab.
- Enter Minutes and Seconds for the duration.
- Optional: turn on Auto-loop timer for repeating rounds.
- Set Completion Message and Completion Color.
- Switch to the Visual tab for Clock Style, Size, Background Type, and colors.
- Switch to the Audio tab and turn on Enable background audio for music or noise, then choose Audio Type and Volume.
- Select Go Fullscreen, then press Play under the clock to start.
You'll know it worked when the numbers count down and the ring around them fills in.
The timer face also shows quick-set buttons — 5m, 10m, 15m, 25m, 30m — for changing just this run's time left without touching Minutes and Seconds. Reset always returns to the Timer-tab duration, not whichever quick button you tapped.
What each control does
Settings are grouped into three tabs — Timer, Visual, Audio — plus one-click Quick Presets (Focus 5min, Tomato 25min, Brainstorm 10min, Relax 15min) that each set duration, clock style, background, and audio together.
| Control | Range / Options | Default | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minutes | 0–99 | 5 | Whole-minute part of the duration. |
| Seconds | 0–59 | 0 | Remaining seconds of the duration. |
| Auto-loop timer | On/Off | Off | Restarts automatically after a fixed 10-second break instead of stopping at zero. |
| Completion Message | Text | "Time's Up!" | Words shown when the timer finishes (skipped while Auto-loop is on). |
| Completion Color | Color picker | #ff6b6b | Color of the completion text, its glow, and the celebration emoji. |
| Background Color | Color picker | #1a1a2e | Base color behind the clock, for Solid and Gradient backgrounds. |
| Timer Color | Color picker | #ffffff | Color of the clock digits and particles. |
| Clock Style | Split Flap, LED, LCD, Modern, Neon, Matrix | Modern | Visual style of the digit display. |
| Size | Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large | Extra Large | How large the clock renders. |
| Show digital clock | On/Off | On | Toggles the number display; off leaves only background and progress ring. |
| Background Type | Solid Color, Particle Effects, Gradient | Particle Effects | Style of what's behind the clock. |
| Particle Effect | Fireflies, Stars, Snow, Bubbles, Sparks, Sparkles, Rain | Fireflies | Which particle animation plays (Particle Effects only). |
| Particle Count | 10–200 | 50 | How many particles are on screen. |
| Particle Speed | 10–100% | 30% | How fast particles move. |
| Enable background audio | On/Off | Off | Turns on a looping music or noise track while the timer runs. |
| Audio Type | White Noise, Brown Noise, plus named loops (Latin Jam, Acoustic Senses, Asian Wonders, Ethereal Night, Lullaby Baby) | Latin Jam | Which track plays as background audio. |
| Volume | 0–100% | 50% | Loudness of the background track. Capped at a moderate level by design even at 100%. |
Play/Pause, Reset, and a speaker (mute) button sit under the clock, not in the settings panel. The speaker button only appears once Enable background audio is on and mutes the track without pausing the countdown.
Common setups
- Workshop break. Minutes 10, Auto-loop off, Clock Style LED, Completion Message "Back in session", Enable background audio on with Volume around 30–40 so the room can still talk over it.
- Classroom activity with repeating rounds. Minutes 5, Auto-loop on, Clock Style Modern, Background Type Particle Effects with Fireflies or Stars. Each round ends with the chime and a 10-second break, then the next starts on its own — no reset needed between stations.
- Event countdown on a lobby screen. Minutes set to however long until the event starts, Auto-loop off, Size Extra Large, Clock Style Split Flap or LED, Completion Message "We're live!" in your event color, Enable background audio off so the lobby stays quiet until the chime.
Troubleshooting
The countdown falls behind after I switch to another tab or window. This is browser tab throttling, not a bug — background tabs get slowed-down timers to save power. Keep the tab visible, or run the timer in fullscreen on a screen you're not otherwise using.
No sound plays at all when the timer reaches zero. Check the browser tab itself isn't muted (right-click it, or look for a mute icon on it) and that device volume is up. The chime is generated, not a file, so a blocked audio file isn't the cause.
Background music never starts even though Enable background audio is on. Music only plays while the timer is running — press Play first. If it's running and still silent, use the speaker button under the clock; it may have been muted.
Music or noise sounds quiet even with Volume at 100%. Expected — background audio is capped at a moderate level by design. Raise device or browser tab volume instead of relying on the Volume slider alone.
Minutes or Seconds were changed but the displayed time didn't update. A new duration only applies once the timer is paused or reset — it won't jump mid-round. Press Reset, or let the round finish.
The screen shows only the background, no numbers. Show digital clock is off in the Visual tab. Switch it back on.
Next steps
Pair it with Slideshow to show event details before the countdown starts and switch over once it hits zero — useful for the same lobby or waiting-room screen.
